Environmental Challenges to Adopt Climate-Smart Agriculture for Cereals Cultivated in the South Eastern Pampas of Argentina

چکیده
Agricultural productivity has increased in Argentina, with cereals yield going from 1.4 to 4.8 tonnes grain ha-1 during the period 1961-2014 [6]. However, in the Province of Buenos Aires, cereals production has changed its composition during the period 2006 2016, with wheat production decreasing from approx.9 mill. to 5 mill. of tonnes and corn production going from 6.1 to 10. 1 mill. tonnes [7,8]. The reasons for such change may be found in:

Potential benefits of climate forecasting to agriculture
Climate variability leads to economic and food security risks throughout the world because of its major influences on agriculture. Accurate forecasts of climate 3–6 months ahead of time can potentially allow farmers and others in agriculture to make decisions to reduce unwanted impacts or take advantage of expected favorable climate. However, potential benefits of climate forecasts vary conside...

This paper investigated the response of major food crop yields namely beans, cassava, Irish potatoes, maize and sweet potatoes to ongoing changes in climate inRwanda. The projected daily precipitation and temperature data for the period2000-2050 used in this study were generated by stochastic weather generator(LARS-WG) from daily raw data for the period 1961 -2000. These data werecollected from ...
متن کاملEcological lessons and applications from one century of low external-input farming in the pampas of Argentina
Ecology may benefit from long term, large scale experiments on low intensity farming to test theoretical principles and convert them into practical lessons. One century of land conversion in the Argentine pampas, and its effect on critical ecological properties, were analysed and discussed. Land transformation has resulted in significant changes of land use, land cover, energy flow, nutrient dy...
متن کاملLycalopex gymnocercus (Carnivora: Canidae)
Lycalopex gymnocercus (Fischer, 1814) is a canid commonly called the Pampas fox. A sexually dimorphic fox-like carnivore of medium size with reddish coloration on sides and white on the ventral surface, it is 1 of 6 species in the genus Lycalopex. It occurs in eastern Bolivia, western and central Paraguay, Uruguay, north and central Argentina, and southeastern Brazil. It prefers open habitats b...
متن کاملClimatic interpretation of a 1.9 Ma environmental magnetic record of loess deposition and soil formation in the central eastern Pampas of Buenos Aires, Argentina
Much of what we know about Quaternary climate has been learned from sedimentary records from the world’s oceans. With the exception of the extensive studies of the Chinese loess/paleosol sequence and more recent studies of long lake records, there are few long terrestrial climate records, particularly from the southern hemisphere. The loess record of Argentina provides an important opportunity ...
